Re Thomas Forrest and Janet wardrop buried in loudoun kirkyard
Oct 17 2009, 7:06 PM EDT
Thomas Forrest and Janet Wardrop were my great, great grandparents. I have managed to trace the Wardrop family back, but not Thomas Forrest. I know Thomas had a illegitimate sonwith an Anne Hamilton, Galston in 1839 and the first of his 4 children with Janet (Robert Wardrop Forrest - my great grand-father) in 1840. From the 1841 census I know Thomas Forrest was born in Scotland, Sometime around 1814, but not in Ayrshire. Beyond that the trail goes cold. Are there any parish records survivng that won't have been added to Scotlandspeople.gov.uk and that might have more information about who Thomas was and where he came from? I know he died of typhoid in 1848. Grave inscription is Thomas FORREST, Surgeon, died at Galston 17th September 1848 aged 34 years. Do you find this valuable? |

Hi, I'm new to your site and have not taken the opportunity to have a look through it at all. I will though.I'm not new to genealogy / local histories though so I'm sure I'll find it of interest. The only reason I found your site was because I was searching Google for Robert Wardrop Forrest. A couple of years ago I made contact with 'someone' regarding RWF as I'd come across his details while researching my own Forrest family. I've since misplaced this persons details. Anyway, to the point - I was wandering around Cathcart cemetery in Glasgow on Friday and as always, had my eyes open for any Forrest stones or memorials. I came across two stones that will be of interest to your anonymous correspondent and perhaps yourself. I found two stones which are probably related but have not fully analysed yet. There is a mine of information on both these stones - dates of birth, death and relationships. I'm also sure any descendant unable to visit the graves would like a copy of my photos. Names on the stones: First stone 1.George McEwan, surgeon 2.Charlotte Forrest 3.John Forrest 4.Darcy Stewart 5.Jane Wardrop 6.Rev. James Wardrop McEwan 7.Jane McEwan Second stone 1.Margaret Dick 2.Robert Wardrop Forrest MD 3.Alexander Whitelaw Forrest 4.William Forrest 5.Hugh Forrest 6.Jessie Wardrop Forrest I'll be happy to share the info and pass on my photographs. I would also be very interested in any additional information you are able to pass on to me, particularly in relation to the Forrest side. I do hope your previous correspondent revisits this thread, but I look forward to hearing from you. Dave (Forrest), Glasgow Do you find this valuable? |

Hopefully the anonymous poster will register if they visit the site again. I have emailed you direct though as I have another researcher for this family whom I think would be happy to correspond with you.

Dave - Thanks for the information about the Forrest gravestones. I would love to have a copy of your photograph. I am related to the Wardrop side of these families and I have a lot of data on Wardrops, but not the Forrest side. I am happy to share any information that would be useful to you. Robert Wardrop Forrest and his brother were a fascinating pair; physicians and co-holders of a patent on extracting gold and silver from ores. That's a story I found by googling.Katherine, in California Do you find this valuable? |
