MACKIE / McKAY families Loudon
Mar 15 2009, 8:47 AM EDT
Hi from Oz,I'm a direct descendant of the MACKIE families in Newmilns, namely Stewart Mackie and wife Martha Parker who were married 17 Feb 1792. I'd like to hear from anyone else researching this family or any of the other Mackie families in Newmilns. I noticed an error in the burial transcription on this site "matthew ? Marthe weddaw of the dec Stuert Mackie weaver in Dykburn' Should read MARTHA. I believe Claud Wrathall has some info re this family submitted on IGI ,. I'd like to hear from him if it's at all possible. Great site. Angela Do you find this valuable? |

AngelaI have no Mackie relatives that I know of but I do have a McMurtrie (this spelling) connection: My ancestor John Caldwell came to Galston some time before 1799 when he was listed on the military muster roll. He married Mary Morton shortly thereafter and between mary and his second wife Agnes McClanachan he had 13 children - many died young and possibly as a result of one of the Cholera, Typhus or Smallpox epidemics that still happened. He was born at St Quivox but lived the rest of his life at Galston. His elder sister Janet married Andrew McMurtrie at St Quivox in 1807. I found a detailed listing of the McMurtrie family on the web - it is easily found by searching McMurtrie and Caldwell. One descendent emigrated to Queensland in the late 1800's. Likewise one of John's grandson's families in 1883 to Gympie - they may have known each other. At the burial of John Caldwell the sexton's name is John McMurtrie so we know that the McMurtrie family were in Galston at 5/2/1855. My family came to Australia in 1959 and my other claim to fame is that my parents owned bankhead cottage when I was a small child - the property abuts against the wall of Loudoun Kirk. I am now in Coffs Harbour. Tom Caldwell Do you find this valuable? |

Hi Tom,Thankfully I don't have to add McMurtry/McMurtrie research to my list ! It has all been done by my father in-law Sam McMurtry ( have you had contact with him?) He has his finger on the pulse re all the various branches. Drop him a line he'd love to hear from you his email - s1mcmurtry@optusnet.com.au Angela Do you find this valuable? |

"Hi Tom,Thanks Angela - I will contact Sam. Our link to the McMurtrie's (as it is spelled in our connection) goes way back to the early 1800's but the subsequent generations to at least grandchildren seem to have moved around the pits (they were coalminers) in concert with their relations in various branches of the Caldwell family. Although our family came from Galston there seems to have been a strong link back to the other branches of the family in Dreghorn parish and that continued at least until the early 1900's. I have evidence that the Caldwell's who emigrated to Gympie in 1883 did keep in regular contact with their Scots relatives right up until about the end of WWI. All this does not help with your specific research but the Galston Census' for 1841 and 1851 are now on-line through Freecen. Thanks for your prompt reply which unfortunately was diverted when the Loudoun Kirk notification was dumped in my spam email box - could have been easily overlooked. Tom Do you find this valuable? |

The McMurty website has some interesting DNA results from quite a large sample. I'm in Brisbane. Angela Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks Angela - since then I have contacted your Dad and also found there were other McMurtrie marriages inthe Caldwell family - including a later one to an Andrew Caldwell at Mauchline - that Andrew is not a known relation of ours but Mauchline is quite close to Galston. At the moment I am still of the opinion that the McMurtries and Caldwells at St Quiovox came from the same area and that is likely to have been the Dalmellington area.I will check the McMurtrie site for the DNA but as the saying goes: "it's a wise child that knows its own father".
