David Loudoun
Feb 23 2008, 7:11 AM EST I have read the Anon contribution concerning David Loudoun. The contributor has David Loudoun as born on 27 March 1743 to James Loudoun in Galston Ayr. I have copy of the parish record which states his father as MURDOCH LOUDOUN. There may be another David Loudoun born to a James Loudoun, but I can find no record of him. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: David Loudoun
Mar 4 2008, 10:39 AM EST I've had a look in the familysearch site and there is a Murdoch Loudoun, father of David shown on it, but there are no contributors shown against it. Also in the pedigree files there is David married to Janet Mitchell in 1763, his father is James, the contribution is by Claude & Jean Wrathall of the LDS and there research has been quite sound - however since they don't give a source, I'm not sure where they got it from. The Loudouns and Mitchells were corn millers from Loudoun Mill, Newmilns and Darvel Mill respectively and I think Janet is one of the Darvel Mill Mitchells. I could be wrong of course, it's been a very long time since I looked at these families. There are quite a number of Loudouns. I also had a quick search in scotlandspeople and there is a David, father Murdoch in Galston. The chances of two Davids born on the same day, one to James and the other to Murdoch is probably remote. I did a parent search on scotlandspeople and it only came up with one child. I did the same search for James L and Janet Mitchell and I got nil results. I couldn't find an MI for any of the Loudouns mentioned. The birth date, I would agree belongs to David, son of Murdoch but can anyone prove the rest of the information? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: David Loudoun
Mar 4 2008, 12:26 PM EST Thanks for looking at "my" Loudoun family. One of the reasons why I think that I have the wrong birth records for David with a father called Murdoch is that David and Janet did not name any of their sons Murdoch, but did have a James. Also, we only have the correct birthdate for Murdoch's son, and as we can find no record of a James Loudoun that son David may have been born on a different day. I also think that it would be unlikely to have David born in Galston when they were Loudoun/Newmilns families. I know Galston is nearby, but still..... Do you find this valuable? |

RE: David Loudoun
Mar 4 2008, 5:32 PM EST I've just posted up the transcriptions of Loudoun burials and there are quite a few Loudouns of Loudoun Mill in them. Corn mills quite often took the name of the miller regardless of what the original name was but to make things difficult it could be named after Loudoun Castle. There are some wills and inventories for Loudoun in scotlandspeople but none of them go back far enough. Probably a search through the sassines might help to find out when and which ones were given sassines to the mill. Another place that might mention it is the "Register of the Great Seal" (best to start at vol II (eleven) and work back.- the last few volumes are in English but the earlier ones are in Latin). Have you checked out the "James Mair Collection" - link to it on the menu on the left - lots of pictures of Loudoun Mill (page 19)? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
